About Dr. Shulman
Before Alissa M. Shulman, M.D., ever held a scalpel, she held a sculptor's chisel. An honors graduate of SUNY Buffalo with dual degrees — one in anatomy, one in fine arts (sculpture) — Dr. Shulman came to plastic surgery through an unlikely but entirely logical path: a high school externship at Buffalo General Hospital convinced her that surgery and art were not two separate vocations, but one. She has been pursuing that conviction ever since. Her medical training traces an arc of sustained excellence: medical school at SUNY Buffalo's Jacobs School of Medicine, general surgery residency and a research fellowship in microsurgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, and plastic surgery training at the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo. In 2009, she founded Sovereign Plastic Surgery in Sarasota, Florida — a solo practice built entirely on her terms, focused from the outset on body sculpting procedures from the neck down. That art-world instinct permeates her practice. Dr. Shulman approaches each case as a compositional problem: which features to emphasize, which proportions to refine, and how to achieve results that read as the patient's best self rather than evidence of intervention. She serves as the first female Chief of Surgery and Section Chief of Plastic Surgery at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
